A quick introduction to using OneNote as an Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN), setting it up within a safe and compliant, accessible location to comply with research integrity and FAIR data principles, and the opportunity to explore functions and features, templates and suggestions for set-up and datatypes.

Course Content

Laboratory notebooks
We explore the reponsibilities you have as a scientist to well documented research and the expectations which come with this.
Why OneNote?
There are plenty of ELN systems available, so why is Babraham using OneNote? We look at the strenths and weaknesses of this system compared to the other options.
The ELN area on SharePoint
We go through the way that OneNote is configured at Babraham and show how you can ensure you are using OneNote in a compliant manner to ensure data security.
Practical Use of OneNote
We look at some of the basic functionality for creating and editing content in OneNote and discuss how you can use this when describing your work.
Sharing, authorship and versions
We look at how you can share your records with your line manager and other staff as required. We show how the data in OneNote is recorded and how you can track changes and version history.
Suggested set up for a laboratory notebook
OneNote is a very flexibile system which allows for lots of different layouts and notebook structures to be used. Here we look at our suggested standard template, and discuss how you might want to modify this for the specific requirements of your group or method of working.
